A Message from our Rector,
Fr. Gary Lawler:

The Season after Pentecost is known by our Roman Catholic friends as “an ordinary” season.  We have been shaped by our social environment and by the ubiquitous purveyors of materialism and personal excess to automatically hear ‘ordinary” as meaning common and/or boring.  Actually, “ordinary” is meant merely to reflect orderly and peaceful circumstances, free of the hullabaloo which dominates the less “ordinary” times,  the perfect setting for personal grown and spiritual maturity which are clearly more difficult to achieve during periods of festivity and excitement.  The Season after Pentecost has also come to be known as “The Season of the Spirit,” because during it long succession of “ordinary” days and Sundays, we seek the guidance of the Holy Spirit as we try to live out the promises of Christ and the implications of living in his as yet unrealized kingdom here on earth.  For those who invite the Holy Spirit into their lives, and honestly open their hearts to its direction, and honestly strive to live out those directions to the best or their ability, there is this sure promise:  The season will not be common, boring, or anywhere nearly long enough!

Yours faithfully,
Gary+

The Ann A Log

On this Ninth Sunday after Pentecost, we are taking a departure from the regular course of Sunday readings to celebrate an important saint who is all too often given short shrift here at Saint Anne’s Parish.  The Feast of Saint James the Apostle, frequently referred to as Saint James the Greater, falls on July 25th, every year, but of course not always on Sunday.  In the years when it occupies a weekday, it is nearly always overshadowed and frequently lost in our enthusiasm to get to the Feast of Saint Anne, our Patornal Feast Day, on July 26th.  As one of our Lord’s closer and much treasured disciples, we are pleased to have this opportunity to single him out and hold him up for veneration.  His life and example are both informative and inspirational as we seek always to grow in our knowledge and love of our Lord Jesus Christ, his beloved master, and ours.  Happy and Blessed St. James’ Day!

* Our Adult Bible Study group continues to meet on Sunday mornings at 9:00 am to read, mark and inwardly digest God’s Holy Word.  This Sunday we are beginning a new course of study on the Old Testament led by a series of lectures by Professor Amy-Jill Levine of Vanderbilt University Divinity School.  It is never too late to become a regular member of this august group of Biblical scholars and inquirers. There is no special preparation required for full participation.  Just come and bring your open and inquiring mind and a receptive and eager heart.

* Tomorrow, Monday, July 26th, is our Patronal Feast, Saint Anne’s Day.  While it holds the status of a Lesser Feast in the Church Calendar, for us, it is one of the Major Feasts of the year.  Over the years, our celebration has taken on many different forms, usually dictated by where the day falls in the weekly calendar.  This year, St. Anne’s Day is a Monday.  Since for us, it is a Major Feast, there will be a full round of Offices during the day, culminating in a High Mass at 6:20 pm.  An All Parish Potluck Supper is scheduled to follow at 7:30 pm.  This will be a great time for our two worshiping congregations to come together for an all parish event. A sign-up sheet has been posted in the Undercroft to assure adequate quantities and varieties of consumables.  Be sure to make Saint Anne’s Day a must on your calendar.

* At their monthly meeting this week, the Vestry decided to announce that they are ready to receive applications for the 2010-2011 school year for the Jeanne and Don Anderson Scholarship.  All members in good standing for the Parish are eligible to apply.  The Anderson Scholarship was established to provide financial assistance to those who are accepted into or pursuing a regular course in an institution of higher learning.  The application forms are available this morning, or at any time from Fr. Lawler.  Applications need to be completed and returned before the next Vestry meeting on August 18, 2010.

* Saint Anne’s is the beneficiary of many in-kind gifts and donations.  This week we received a piano from the Scott family.  It has not yet found its permanent home.  However, it is on display at the bottom of the stairs in the Undercroft.  Thank you Scott’s for this wonderful gift.

* The calendar for August has been published and is available for your perusal a the rear of the nave this morning.  Please pick up your copy as you leave.

* The flowers at the altar today, are given to the Greater Glory of God and in thanksgiving and celebration of their 25th wedding anniversary this coming Tuesday, by Pam and Tim Long.
